Following his studies in Musicology, Philosophy and Psychology at the University of Würzburg he was awarded a PhD in Musicology at the same University in 1986, with a thesis on early Giuseppe Verdi’s opera choruses. Winner of the first edition of the "Premio Rotary Club di Parma – Giuseppe Verdi"; 1984–1986 guest researcher at the Istituto Nazionale di Studi Verdiani in Parma; 1986–1988 fellowship at the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) research foundation. Between 1988–1989 research fellow at the Hochschule der Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt-on-Main (Prof. Peter Cahn) and between 1989–1994 at the Forschungsinstitut für Musiktheater der Universität Bayreuth, Schloss Thurnau (Prof. Sieghart Döhring). From 1995–1996, Director of the Deutsches Studienzentrum in Venice; in 1997 he was appointed Director of the Department of Music History at the German Historical Institute in Rome.
